1998 Israel Tour: Day One: March 7
Joppa, Caesarea, Carmel, Nazareth
Traveling to Israel
Our journey began March 5th with a flight from New York to Tel Aviv via Frankfurt,
arriving the afternoon of March 6th. After dinner and a night's rest in our hotel
on the shore of the Mediterranean, we began our first full day of sightseeing.
|
Joppa
Traditional site of the home of Simon the Tanner at Joppa (Jaffa).
The apostle Peter stayed "many days" at his home before going to Caesarea
to preach to Cornelius.
|
|
Caesarea Maritima
Remains of the Herodian amphitheater at Caesarea by the sea.
|
|
Roman Aqueduct
Aqueduct at Caesarea alongside the Mediterranean Sea.

Lunch on Mount Carmel
Pat Stagner shows us her lunch, a falafel: fried balls of mashed chickpeas
stuffed in pita bread with salad toppings. Proof of the American theory that
anything can taste good if you just fry it.
|
|
Mount Carmel Summit
Thaxter Dickey waves to us from the top of Mount Carmel, overlooking the Megiddo Valley.
|
|
Roadside Tomb
Almon Williams, Doug Seaton, and Dick Clay check out a tomb, complete with
rolling stone, on the way to Megiddo.
|
|
Nazareth
From the interior of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation.
Tradition holds that the church is located on the site where Mary and her family
would have gathered water in Nazareth. Whether she was told at this spot
that she would bear the Messiah is unknown at best.
|
|
Tiberias
Pat Stagner checks out the night life in Tiberias, after dining with the group
at the hotel. Several of us went along, and ended up having coffee and dessert
at a small coffeehouse near the Sea of Galilee.
