Our home while we are in the UK is the town of Woking (pronounced "WHOA king"),
a suburban community just outside the M25 near London, in the county of Surrey.
To most Londoners, Woking is an uninteresting little place, but it suits our
family perfectly. Everything we need for day to day living is within easy walking distance
from our flat -- my office, the Town Centre with its shops
and restaurants, the park and leisure center, and for those times when we need to
venture further away, the railway station. In 30 minutes or so we can get to central London
by train to Waterloo Station. We make that trek at least twice a week in order to get
to church services, which are held near King's Cross.
Perhaps Woking's greatest claim to fame is as the birthplace of modern science
fiction. H. G. Wells was living here when he wrote The War of the Worlds, which
takes place in and around Woking. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of its publishing,
the town erected a Martian sculpture in 1998.
Here are a few photos from around Woking that I took before we moved here. I hope
to post some more soon.
